Provincial Empire Marble Top Commode
#A244FP. Circa 1815. France. This handsome 3-drawer commode has an incomparable restrained beauty. While it has all the design elements of French Empire furniture, the application is more provincial than Parisian made pieces. The design makes this chest of drawers a perfect fit with almost any design scheme, be it contemporary, eclectic, or traditional. It will work in the living room, dining room, foyer, or bedroom. The ebonized animal feet, lion head pulls, and classical capitals were popular Empire motifs inspired by archeological finds in Greece in the 18th Century. It is bench-made of old growth mahogany with chestnut interior and hand-cast gilt bronze mounts. The black marble top appears to be original; it is flecked with white spots which hint at the look of a galaxy in a Star Trek episode. Overall good condition with minor cracks and dings to wood commensurate with age. Cracks in side panels. Small chips on the edge of the marble top.51" wide x 34" tall x 23" deep. $4,200.00.
