Grand Tour Bronze Bust of Homer,
#A245AP. Circa 1890. Italy. This solid (except for the pedestal) hand-cast bronze is of the 8th Century BCE Greek poet, author of the Iliad & the Odyssey. Although there are no images from life of Homer, busts such as this Grand Tour piece are based on Classical Greek and Roman statues. The Grand Tour was for some of those who could afford it -- all about ancient culture and art. Americans traveled to Europe where they purchased objects such as this bust to ornament their homes and show off that they had been abroad. This Homer has a rich dark bronze color and very fine details in the face, beard and hair. It will have pride of place in your library or study or in any room where a touch of the classical world is desired. Excellent condition with some minor scratches on the bottom and very fine wear on shoulder. 5.5" wide xb.b" deep x 10" tall. $1,500.00.
