#9982AP. Circa 1820. Italy. This bronze is a miniature copy of a life-size marble statue of Marcus Nonius Balbus the Younger which today stands in the National Archaeological Museum in Naples. The statue originally stood in the Forum of Herculaneum and was buried in the eruption of Vesuvius in 79 CE. In the 19th Century, highly skilled artisans in Italy made miniature copies of Classical works of art and sold them to the wealthy who were embarked on what was referred to as the "Grand Tour" of Europe. This particular equestrian piece has very fine detail and is an accurate copy of the original. Very minor scratches. 13.5" long x 5.5" deep x 14.5" tall. $2,400.00.
