Classical Plum Pudding Mahogany Card Table
#5280FL, Circa 1825. Boston. This handsome card/games table was hand made by a highly skilled cabinet maker in the early 1820's, probably in Boston. The table is made of hand-rubbed plum pudding mahogany with brass line inlay and birch or maple secondary woods. Plum pudding mahogany (Acajou or Honduras Mahogany) has a rare figured grain, which looks like large drips running down the board. Used in fine furniture and joinery, boat building, and in the guitar industry for acoustic sets and necks. The motifs of the hand carving on the base were inspired by the designs of ancient Greece, Egypt, and Rome. Like most center-column Empire card tables in America, the top swivels 90 degrees and flips open to twice the size it is closed. Below the top as it swivels is revealed a storage compartment. In today's world, tables such as this are often used as console or pier tables to stunning effect. They are excellent used as dining tables for 2 or as dessert or center tables. Table appears to have been refinished about 75 years ago. Minor dings, dents, and light scratches commensurate with age. Casters possibly replaced. 37.25" wide and deep (when open) x 18.25" deep (when closed) x 28.75" tall. $4,600.00.
