Chippendale Cherry Cabinet-On-Chest
#A158FP. Circa 1790s and later. Virginia. This handsome cupboard probably started life in the late 18th Century as a 2 over 3 drawer Chippendale old growth cherry wood chest. In the early 19th Century a 2 door cabinet was adapted to fit on top of the chest. Sometime in the early 20th Century the top was modified to include the beautiful broken pediment crown with dentil molding, and the hand-cast Prince of Wales feather brass pulls were added. All the changes have gone together to create the stunning piece that exists today. The long use and aging of the wood give the piece a beautiful patina. The cabinet is perfect in any room where stunning impact and practical use intersect. The 2 shelves in the top are stationary. The cupboard comes into 2 pieces for ease of moving. The secondary wood is primarily poplar. Signs of age such as old dings, scratches, and wear which contribute to the patina. The back of the cupboard top and the bottom shelf were replaced around 50 years ago. Minor old repairs and hardware replacements. 51" wide x21.5"deep x 88" tall. $1,800.00.
