#7839AN. Circa 1892. England This stoneware jug or pitcher was made by W.T. Copeland & Sons (successor of Spode) of Stoke-on-Trent, England for Burley & Company of Chicago. There are both impressed and stamped marks on the bottom. The pitcher was made to commemorate the 400th anniversary of Columbus's 1492 voyage to the New World. The bas relief scene on each side is from the famous painting showing Columbus and his crew making landfall in the West Indies. The intense blue of the jug highlights the white applied decoration to create a stunning effect. This is a real collector's item. Very good condition - Slight crazing on the bottom commensurate with age. 7.5" diameter x 9" wide (including handle and spout) x 8.25" tall. $525.00.
