"Osprey's Domain" by Sir James Lawton Wingate (1846-1924)
#8227PZ. Circa 1895. Scotland. Oil on Canvas -- gold leaf and gilt frame. This large and compelling landscape featuring an osprey's nest atop the large tree in the foreground is by Scotland's leading landscape painter of his era. Although he began his painting career influenced by Ruskin and the Pre-Raphaelites, he gravitated to increasingly impressionistic landscapes, such as this one, which made his reputation. He studied at the Royal Scottish Academy, exhibited there regularly from 1880 on, and was its President from 1919 (the year he was knighted) until shortly before his death in 1924 at age 77. Labels on the back of the frame date it from 1895 or later -- Doig, Wilson & Wheatley were leading art dealers of the day, and the frame (which we believe is original) was probably handmade by Aitken & Dotson. Very good condition. Two visible horizontal lines across painting which may be old repairs. Height: 50" frame (38" canvas); Width: 61" frame(49.25" canvas). $12,500.00.
