Large Portrait of a Lady
#A107PB. 19th Century. Britain. This British School, Oil on Canvas large portrait of a beautiful Lady was painted in the mid 18th Century, possibly in London. In the mid 18th Century it was fashionable for elegant ladies to be painted in simple gowns without any jewelry or highly constructed hairdos and in simple, naturalistic, unfussy landscapes in order to emphasize their natural beauty. That is certainly the case with this painting.. Her hair, gown, and dark minimal drape and landscape all serve to show off her lovely face and figure. She is ready to make real impact in any room with any style, decor or architecture. Over a mantel, a console table, or at the top of a staircase, this portrait will create the "wow" factor that makes any room special. The simple gold leaf and gilt frame appears to be about 100 years old and was probably put on this painting about 50 years ago. Condition: This painting was relined and restretched about 50 years ago. Some crackle and possible inpainting on canvas commensurate with age. Minor gold flaking on frame and corner damage only visible on back. Frame touched up by us. Framed dimensions: 49" tall x 42" wide x 4" deep. $7,200.00.
